A cover letter is a one-page document you submit in your job application alongside a resume. The level of formality your header has will depend on the company to which you apply. If you’re applying to a formal business, it’s important to use a formal header to open your cover letter, like in the sample above. Put your address, the date, and the company’s address. But if you’re applying to a company that isn’t as formal, you don’t need to include yours and the company’s addresses. You can still include the date, though.

While we’re at it, it’s a pesky myth that every job application requires a cover letter. In fact, if a cover letter is requested in the job description, you should include one. But if the job description doesn’t mention a cover letter, it’s unnecessary.

The second paragraph This will form the main part of your letter and it’s the bit where you can really sell yourself. Focus on showing a recruiter how much they can benefit from your contributions to their company, and also mention how you relate to the companies values and aspirations.
